The members contend that, since all of us are consumers, we will be able to benefit from this endeavor.

Atty. Raul Barbarona, chairman of the committee, has arranged for Atty. Rene Paredes, Chairman of the HNU Law Center, to attend the Board meeting on June 20, 2008 in order to be able to present the framework of the consumer protection project with the goal of making said Law Center to commit its resources and collaborate with the HNU Alumni Association in support of this advocacy. It is anticipated that there will be problems in the future that need legal services, thus, the importance of this meeting held at the HNU Alumni Center.

The committee has realized the value of empowering the consumers by giving them ample information as to their rights and obligations as well as knowing where to go in search for redress. Since HNU is an educational institution, the committee hopes, among other things, to be able to convince the academic community to include Consumer Protection as part of the curriculum as early as the elementary and high school.

Helping Atty. Barbarona in the Community Outreach Committee are Neneng L. Corales, Gloria Araneta and Eurie Gutierrez. Even if the Consumer Body has not been formally launched yet, the HNU Alumni Board of Directors participated in the public hearing conducted by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) regarding the petition of Bohol Light Company Inc. to pass on to the electric consumers here in Tagbilaran the franchise taxes that it paid to the BIR and the city government for the past five (5) years with the intention of recovering them. So, if approved, this will undoubtedly raise the electric bill of each and every electric consumer here in Tagbilaran. The Board led by VP for Internal Affairs, Raul Barbarona, vehemently opposes this and stayed all throughout the proceedings that lasted the whole morning at the Governor’s Mansion.

It was actually a celebration of three important events namely the Centennial of the presence of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) Mission in the Philippines, the transition to beatitude of St. Arnold Janssen, founder of the SVD, and the 62nd foundation year anniversary of our dear Alma Mater.

Many Holynamians who are already well established in their respective careers and even those who are already basking in the fruits of their toil have endless reasons to be thankful for. Each one may have a different story to tell about struggles fought and wrought. Those who are continuously making breakthroughs though agree that success is not a fruit of one’s individual isolated effort and no challenge is insurmountable in a community nurtured by a web of opportunities, many of which are unselfishly shared by others.

One very pressing challenge nowadays is the rising cost of commodities due to the spiraling cost of fuel prices in the international market. In this scenario, the disadvantaged sector could no longer cope with the demands of higher education. The HNU Alumni Association of Tagbilaran, Inc., believes that every Holynamian has a significant role to play in this situation. For this reason, the association would like to make itself significant by pursuing two crucial alternatives, namely, providing a mechanism wherein those who open to channel some of their resources for noble intentions can do so without hesitation and giving opportunities to poor yet talented Boholanos to avail of a chance to finish college.

Thus, the Board of Directors (BOD) of the association decided to enhance its Scholarship Program in terms of resources and number of beneficiaries by embarking on a dinner-for-a-cause dubbed as Holynamians Care: A Dinner Date for the HNU Alumni Scholarship Fund. The fund-raising event will be held at the Metro Centre Hotel on July 24, 2008 starting at 6:30 PM. It is expected to draw a sizeable number of donors from various classes, chapters and alumni groups. Different business establishments are also expected to lend their support to the program.

Tickets are prized at P 500.00 per donor but if a group decides to take a table of twelve (12), it is given at a discounted prize of P 5,000.00. On this occasion, the association will also be presenting its major programs for the coming years. To make the gathering more enjoyable, a live band will be on hand to entertain the donors while three bingo games will also be played with very exciting prizes. More surprises await generous donors whose presence will certainly make the event very interesting.

The Board of Directors are confident that this event will always be remembered not only because of its success but more importantly, every time the association organizes a fund-raising activity such as this, the web of opportunities is expanded and thus put more meaning to the adage “Holynamians do care”.
